Questions to Ask Your Therapist during a Consultation Call

Many therapists offer a free 10-to-15-minute consultation call, and I recommend you take advantage of any service that is offered for free! A consultation call is a chance for you to get to know your potential therapist and see if it might be a good fit to work together. However, it can be difficult to know where to even start when it comes to asking a random person questions! Below are a list of potential questions to guide you in your therapy journey:

  • Do you feel comfortable working with someone who has a history of (i.e. trauma, anxiety, depression, etc.)? If your potential therapist is equipped to work with those issues, they should be able to confidently answer that question.

  • How exactly would you work with someone with said mental health issue? Your potential therapist can provide examples of how they might have worked with clients in the past relating to those issues and how they intend to work with you through those challenges.

  • What type of modalities do you use in your practice? If you don’t know the types of modalities they mention, ask them to elaborate to understand the ways it could possibly benefit you.

  • What populations do you enjoy working with most? Do you have a specialty? Many therapists enjoy working with specific populations and identities, whether that’s working with children of immigrants or people with anxiety.

  • What do you do for fun outside of sessions? Therapists are human too! Therapy is a highly personal space, and it could feel helpful for you to resonate and bond with your therapist on outside topics to build rapport. Knowing that your therapist enjoys similar, hobbies or music for example, could allow you to feel more connected to them and willing to open up!

  • What are your political ideas, regarding (i.e. abortion care, trans rights, black liberation, etc.)? The personal is very political! It’s important to feel safe in sessions and be met with non-judgment by your therapist.
